The War to End All War– din’t work out that way, as you know.. At the end of the war the phrase “Lest We Forget” became was inscribed on countless WWI Memorials. Our grandparents didn’t want us to forget their sacrifice or the lessons of the Great War..
Our Songs our Soldiers Sang Tribute had to start somewhere, and we picked the First World War for a couple reasons.
One of those reasons is that although Frank W. Buckles the last know surviving veteran of the the war joined the rest of the WWI dough-boys in February of last year (2011) at the rip old age of 110 , there may still be a few surviving widows left.. They deserve to be recognized, Equally Important, the World War I vets raised the children who would one day come to be known as America’s Greatest Generation…. The men and women who got us through WWII. They grew up hearing the stories and listening to the songs their parents sang.. Many of that generation are in their nineties now.. hearing the old songs again might be good for them..
There’s dozens of different sets of lyrics for this one,
In Flanders Fields (8 December 1915)
“In Flanders Fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders Fields.
Take up your quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders Fields.”
– Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae (1872-1918)
