Bread and circuses:
“Bread and circuses” is metonymic for a superficial means of appeasement. In the case of politics, the phrase is used to describe the generation of public approval, not through exemplary or excellent public service or public policy, but through diversion; distraction; or the mere satisfaction of the immediate, shallow requirements of a populace, as an offered “palliative.”

You thought you were awake, you thought you certainly knew everything the left was destroying. You voted for the guy who shattered the Overton Window who had shown you what you had been allowing to happen to your country by ignoring the process. President Trump brought so many Democrats/Independents and those who’d never voted before to the arena, and that was the awakening for many. Those of us who’ve been at this fight for much longer thought we could point out and show how corrupt and anti-American the left was to these new voters, we were blind to the circus that acted as a distraction. The NFL, as Rush Limbaugh says, is being killed by liberalism. I call it leftism, but we won’t argue about the title as we all know its true Burn It Down

Limbaugh told NFL players to consider their audience and why they watch them every week.
