The United States is on the verge of becoming the first truly Marxist country in the world. Now that we have become accustomed to….Social Security, Aid For Dependent Children, Medicare, Medicaid and now the National Health system popularly known as Obamacare (did we mention Food Stamps?), EBT cards, the Federal Department of Education of the Public, shotgun-carrying IRS agents and all the rest, we are about to just start doling out the cash – no strings, no hassle, no worries.

It’s called the Universal Basic Income and it amounts to giving (as currently envisioned) approximately $10,000 per year to every breathing human being who can claim US citizenship. Some say it will replace the welfare state, others say it will take away the stress of everyday existence and allow everyday Americans to focus on being…..all that they can be – productive, law-abiding, civic-minded and all the usual platitudes.

You will be hearing a lot more about this in the coming months. Probably sooner rather than later as the usual suspects reach across the various aisles to…..do the right thing (and that phrase is key; look for it to get a lot of use). For now, take a look around and note how the notion of a Universal Basic Income is NOT being rejected out of hand by many of those you would assume are traditional American exceptionalist economists and politicians, and at the same time how it is NOT being loudly
praised and propagated at this early date by many of the usual Socialist Democrat suspects.

Now, do NOT, as you listen to the pros and cons, automatically assume that that means this UBI thing may be a silk purse dressed up as a sow’s ear. First, remember that the economics profession, like many, many others, is not what your father’s economics profession was back in the day. It has been corrupted, dumbed down by our abysmal education “system” and the vicissitudes of political correctness. Also, “conservative” politicians mostly ain’t all that conservative anymore.

Plus, the Socialist Democrats are, along with being opportunistic, pretty good poker players. They told us how much they respected and feared John McCain’s candidacy in 2008. We dutifully gave them John McCain. Then in 2012 they pulled the double switch and told us how Mitt Romney was a pushover because he was a capitalist and the populus would reject him. We just knew they were trying to fool us like they did in’08, didn’t we? So we showed ’em and went with Mittens. Kerrrrrplunk!

In a country where God has been removed from the public square, where the government now takes your child at age three and keeps them until age 26, where you cannot enter into a private contract with a health insurer according to mutually acceptable terms, where, well, we could go on at some length here, but anyway, it is not at all unlikely that this Universal Basic Income will get nudged and nudged and nudged into the public consciousness, romanticized, ‘critically’ studied and at some point get some , oh, ‘Ways and Means’ committee time and some serious lobbying efforts.

And when we say Universal BASIC Income, keep three other words in mind, won’t you? They are Federal MINIMUM Wage. Oh, yeah, we’re all going to be more equal than others some day. From those according to their ability.
