Jeb Bush Admires LBJ Governing Style: If Jeb Counts on “America to be Passive?” He Counts Wrong

Maggie’s Notebook

Politicians will say anything to get elected. Jeb Bush likely meant it, though, when he vowed to approach the presidency as “master of the Senate,” the words used to describe LBJ by his biographer. Can you imagine Jeb getting in anyone’s face the way Johnson did, so often, so rudely and so well?

Jeb, who has not announced a run yet, said we need leadership and suggests he will do whatever it takes to get immigration, energy and education fixed, using the wily ways of LBJ. LBJ is known for his “sausage-making” in the halls of Congress. The sausage grinder hasn’t been cleaned in decades. It may be too late to sanitize it. No matter what Jeb Bush does, Chuck Schumer, Barbara Boxer, Charlie Rangel, Elijah Cummings, Nancy Pelosi, Maxine Waters, so many others — they’ll still be there. I don’t want them to make sausage for me.

If the Left in Congress ever comes right, close to the middle, some sausage-making in a sanitized environment will be a good thing. Jeb Bush can’t make that happen. He’s too passive, too global-thinking.
