Obama considering cutting 80% of our Nuclear Arsenal

- in News, News and Opinion

During the cold war the only countries with nuclear capabilities for the United States, the Soviet Union, Great Britain and France. Now, Pakistan, China, North Korea, India, Israel and very shortly Iran all have nuclear capabilities. Several of those countries are openly hostile to the United States. There is very little question that if Iran acquires nuclear weapons they will use them against Israel.

Faced with a growing danger, Barack Obama thinks it’s a good time to reduce the American arsenal. He’s talking about is much is 80%. This borders on insanity. As president he is charged with the responsibility of keeping America secure not weakening our defenses.

Like it or not insured mutual destruction works. If we’re not in a position to completely destroy any country that attacks us with nuclear weapons we leave ourselves exposed. Fortunately I believe that the president will require congressional approval to do this.

U.S. considers sharp cuts to nuclear force

The Obama administration is weighing options for sharp new cuts to the U.S. nuclear force, including a reduction of up to 80 percent in the number of deployed weapons, The Associated Press has learned.

Even the most modest option now under consideration would be an historic and politically bold disarmament step in a presidential election year, although the plan is in line with President Barack Obama’s 2009 pledge to pursue the elimination of nuclear weapons.

No final decision has been made, but the administration is considering at least three options for lower total numbers of deployed strategic nuclear weapons cutting to around 1,000 to 1,100, 700 to 800, or 300 to 400, according to a former government official and a congressional staffer. Both spoke on condition of anonymity in order to reveal internal administration deliberations.
